What Is Liquid Forging Technology (LFT)

Normally in the conventional and generally used liquid forging technology the liquid metal is poured in to the mould and pressurized to obtain close grain structure like forging for small near shape castings and is mainly used for Aluminium alloy castings.

To cater the demands of large steel components with forging qualities and with close shape, we have developed and added new dimension to liquid forging technology (LFT).

It provide benefits of conventional casting and conventional forging while addressing their limitations.

The metal of desired composition is poured in specially designed and placed moulds. The molten metal mass is subjected to controlled vibration at solidification zone in defined axis result in aligning grains in a thread like structure resembling forging pattern and strength. The vibrations so given helps to form highly dense and closed structure virtually eliminating tiny empty pockets obtained in normal casting.

The vibrations given has following components

  • The frequency which is always sub resonance to have sufficient grain movement.
  • The amplitude or displacement which is determined by the mass of metal to be vibrated.
  • The direction which sets the grain flow in a particular direction to form thread like structure.

The casting obtained with LFT shows better physical properties due to uniform and homogeneous grain pattern. The sizes of grains can be controlled to some extent further improving homogeneity and strength of the component so cast.
The casting by LFT have no stresses and does not require any further treatment of stress relieving moreover heat treatment for grain refinement is eliminated to great extent in most of the normally alloyed steel casting.
